Tuesday Travel inspiration: Stepping up
My fascination with highly unpronounceable names continues. Today's inspiration comes from a tiny island off the coast of Spain - Gaztelugatxe (I told you so!).
The island is barren except for a quiet little hermitage on top of the weather-hewn rocks, but what is really striking is its man-made bridge, the only connection to mainland Spain. Around 300 steps take you over the rough northern seas to the very top of the islet.
It has a very diverse history too: from pirates to naval battles and shipwrecks, Gaztelugatxe has seen it all. Get to it from Bilboa, the nearest airport, and enjoy the quiet isolation of the area. A perfect place to start afresh in 2015!
